Topic: “Mindful Communication: Practice Listening and Speaking in a Mindful Way”
“Research shows that at least 40 percent of our waking hours are spent listening. Within a few minutes following a discussion, the average listener is able to recall only 25 percent or less of what he heard. As the day goes on, even that percentage diminishes considerably” Rebecca Z. Shafir, The Zen of Listening: Mindful Communication in the Age of Distraction
Marti Cason, a Dallas Metro North TBW member, will present “Mindful Communication: Practice Listening and Speaking in a Mindful Way.” Marti has been an educator for over a decade, teaching at all levels from primary grades to post-secondary. Teaching others is not only about speaking, but listening to your audience. While earning a Master’s in Education Administration from the University of Texas at Austin, one of her professors had the class read Susan Scott’s Fierce Conversations: Achieving Success at Work & in Life, One Conversation at a Time. It was a powerful read, and it was influential in helping Marti begin to engage more authentically and mindfully in conversations at work and in everyday relationships.
Marti is currently working as a graduate assistant at the University of North Texas while working toward a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction. Marti’s research interests currently include numeracy development, a dialectic perspective of mathematics concepts, and developing hip-hop pedagogy for mathematics classrooms. As an educator, she challenges both students and fellow educators to be innovative in their approach to mathematics. Marti has been a member of TBW for the past two years and is part of the team that developed the Communicating with Confidence workshop. She currently resides in Denton with her husband, Randy, and two dogs, Holli and Cricket; they are all enthusiastic fans of the Texas Rangers!
