A Leg Up With Legos: Tips for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

The 2005 Census indicated that 5.5 million grandchildren are living with a grandparent. Nearly half of all grandparents are responsible for most of the needs (i.e., food, shelter, clothing) for one or more of their grandchildren. Raising children in the 21st Century is different than it was even twenty years ago. More importantly, parenting again as a grandparent is not "normal" and certainly not what you had planned. Beyond parenting there has to be perspective and self care. This talk is about making sure caregivers and children all get what they need.

Kathi Turner, LCSW, ACSW, CMC of Critical Choices Coaching, is a counselor, with a lot of experience and training related to parenting and family dynamics, but also a coach for unplanned pregnancy and unexpected parenting.  Kathi is a member of Texas Business Women of Dallas Metro North, has a private counseling practice in Plano, and is an adoption home study provider, licensed in Texas and Oklahoma, in addition to her coaching.

TBW of Dallas Metro North is very proud to award five scholarships this year, to five bright, motivated, and truly awe-inspiring young women.   They'll be honored at our May gathering, along with their families.  this is always an uplifting evening, because we'll get to meet them and hear their stories, and they always leave us with enthusiasm and hope for our future. 

Our business meeting will be highlighted by the election of a new slate of officers for 2012-2013.
